How to add VAT

Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the rate: at 21%, by 1.21. €100 before VAT is €121 with VAT; the VAT is the €21 difference.

How to remove VAT (and the usual mistake)

To remove VAT you divide, you don't subtract: at 21%, divide the gross price by 1.21. €121 gross is €100 net.

The usual mistake is to take 21% off the total: 121 − 21% = €95.59, which isn't the net amount. The rate applies to the net amount, so undoing it means dividing.
