How the quota works in 2026

Since 2023 your social security quota depends on what you earn. Start from your business's net income (income minus deductible expenses, the quota included), take off 7% for generic expenses (3% if you're a company director) and divide by 12. That monthly figure puts you in one of 15 bands.

Each band has a minimum and a maximum contribution base. You choose the base within your band; almost everyone picks the minimum. The quota is that base times 31.5%.

It's provisional: the annual settlement

You choose your band at the start of the year based on what you expect to earn, and can change it up to six times a year. The following year, Social Security checks against your tax return: if you earned more, you pay the difference; if less, you get it back.

The flat rate (tarifa plana)

If you're registering for the first time (or haven't been registered in the previous two years), you pay €80 a month for the first 12 months, extendable for 12 more if your annual net income is below the minimum wage. Apply for it when you register, not afterwards.
